Mushroom Drawing Easy Guide

Mushroom Drawing Made Easy

Welcome to our mushroom drawing easy guide. This is an easy, quick and exciting thing to draw for artists at all stages and ages, but written with a beginner in mind. Mushrooms are not at all hard to draw, but as usual it’s best to pay attention to detail to produce the best possible result.

As ever we are going to draw the outline in light pencil lines, some of which we can rub out later, and then draw over in thick marker or bolder pencil lines.

Mushrooms come in many different shapes and sizes, some are poisonous, some are good to eat. Some can even make you see things that are’t there! The poisonous ones are called usually called toadstools, but it can be very difficult to tell the difference between poisonous and edible, so leave it to the experts!

We are going to draw a fairly generic and recognisable mushroom shape, to keep things clear, and avoid confusion. Follow the pictures and the time lapse video at the end to help you piece it all together, and don’t forget to sign up to our mailing list!

Mushroom Drawing Step 1 – Draw the Cap of the Mushroom

The first step involves drawing the cap of the mushroom. Draw a semi-circle in the middle of your page, and then draw a straight line across the base of it to make your mushroom cap. Check the picture below of the video to help.

Mushroom Drawing Step 3 – Draw the Stem of the Mushroom

At this point we can draw in the stem of the mushroom by sketching two curved lines heading downwards. Try to make them roughly parallel so your mushroom drawing looks more realistic. Now draw a slightly curved horizontal line at the top of the stem as shown. You can rub out the line of the of the cap which should be behind the stem not over it, as the picture shows.

Mushroom Drawing Step 4 – Add in Some Grass at the Base of the Stem

Mushrooms often grow best in damp, dark places such as forests, so we are going to draw in some grass at the base of the mushroom’s stem. You can do this by sketching in some squiggly pointed lines (almost like a graph) at a slight angle. We can shade in or colour in this later.

Mushroom Drawing Step 5 – Add in Some Spots on the Mushroom

You can now add in some circles on the mushroom’s cap to make it look more dramatic and attention-grabbing. It might make you think of a toadstool – suggesting that your mushroom is deadly as well as cute!

Mushroom Drawing Step 6 – Add in More Detail to the Grass

Now we are going to add more detail and texture to the grass. You may want to draw a leaf or even a bit of a tree trunk to show your drawing is set in a forest. You could even add a daisy or two, or a fern!

Mushroom Drawing Step 6

Mushroom Drawing Step 7 – Shade or Colour in Your Mushroom Drawing

The final step means adding in some more detail in terms of light and shade, or colour if you like. Consider where the sun/light source will be in your picture and then you add in shadow where you want to. If your light source is to the right, draw in the shadows on the left of the mushroom, and vice versa.
